Shipping from the UK to Australia takes about 3 to 5 days by air freight and about 30 to 45 days by sea freight, port to port, plus time for pickup, customs clearance and delivery. Cost depends on mode, weight or volume, Incoterm and destination. Most UK-originating goods enter Australia duty-free under the Australia-UK Free Trade Agreement (A-UKFTA), in force since 31 May 2023. Import GST of 10% still applies to consignments over AUD 1,000.
Air or sea: which mode suits your shipment
The right mode balances speed against cost per kilogram. Air freight is fastest and suits samples, spare parts, fashion and electronics where stock-outs cost more than freight. Carriers charge air freight on the greater of actual weight or volumetric weight, so bulky light goods cost more to fly.
Sea freight costs far less per cubic metre and suits furniture, machinery, building products and bulk retail stock. Smaller shipments travel as LCL (less than container load) and share a container. Larger shipments justify FCL (full container load). Our FCL vs LCL guide explains the break-even point.
What affects the cost of shipping from the UK
No single price applies to the UK to Australia lane, because rates move with fuel, capacity and demand. Your quote reflects these drivers:
- Mode and service level: air, sea LCL or sea FCL.
- Chargeable weight or volume: kilograms for air, cubic metres or container size for sea.
- Incoterm: decides whether you or your UK supplier pays origin charges, main freight and insurance. See our Incoterms guide.
- Origin and destination charges: UK pickup, export clearance, Australian terminal fees and delivery.
- Government charges: GST, any duty and the ABF import processing charge (AUD 50 to AUD 192 for consignments over AUD 1,000).
- Biosecurity costs: inspections, treatments or fumigation if required.
Ask for an all-in, door-to-door quote. It removes surprise fees at the Australian end.
How the A-UKFTA reduces duty
The Australia-UK Free Trade Agreement entered into force on 31 May 2023. According to ABF Australian Customs Notice 2023/21, UK-originating goods not listed in Schedule 15 of the Customs Tariff Act 1995 became duty-free from that date. Some Schedule 15 goods phase down annually, with most iron and steel items reaching free on 1 January 2027.
To claim the preference, the goods must meet the A-UKFTA rules of origin, and you must hold evidence of origin. Your broker enters preference scheme code UKTA and origin GB on the import declaration. Goods made in another country and only shipped through the UK do not qualify.
Biosecurity checks for UK cargo
UK cargo faces the same Australian biosecurity rules as any origin. Sea freight needs a packing declaration for FCL and LCL, and solid timber packaging must be ISPM 15 compliant or treated.
The 2026-27 BMSB season runs from 1 September 2026 to 30 April 2027. Most of continental Europe is on the target risk country list, which triggers mandatory treatment for goods such as machinery, vehicles and steel. Confirm the UK’s status on the current DAFF list before booking, because DAFF can still select goods for random onshore inspection.
Documents you need from your UK supplier
Complete paperwork keeps your cargo moving at the border. Request these before the goods leave the UK:
- Commercial invoice showing value, currency and Incoterm
- Packing list with weights and dimensions
- Air waybill or bill of lading
- Evidence of UK origin to claim A-UKFTA duty savings
- Packing declaration and any ISPM 15 or treatment certificates
- Permits, if BICON lists conditions for your goods
